Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Sam Hill: The Prince of Castle Nowhere by John E. Tuhy. Timber Press, 1983 — Presumed first edition, lacking later printjng information and 1983 being the date Timber Press first published this title. Hardcover with dust jacket. Book Condition / Dust Jacket Condition • Book: Near Fine -; Clean, attractive hardcover copy with only light shelfwear. Binding tight and square; boards extremely clean and presentable; pages clean and complete, very light uniform toning. Title page bears a signature or inscription, but it is not identified as Sam Hill and should not be treated as a verified author signature unless the name can be read and matched. • Dust Jacket: Very Good; Original dust jacket present with general shelfwear and edgewear that includes two arhival tape repaired small tears ex verso (see photos) Printing identification note: Current listings identify the 1983 Timber Press hardcover as a first edition/first printing in some cases, but other records describe 1983 copies as having no statement of edition. Since this copy has no edition information, the safest wording is "Timber Press, 1983; no edition statement." A 1991/1992 Maryhill Museum reprint is documented as "originally published: Portland, Or.: Timber Press, 1983," confirming this 1983 copy is the original Timber Press issue rather than the later reprint. Signature Notes: Signed by author John E. Tuhy on the title page. Signature not formally authenticated, but appears to be an original hand signature. The signature is placed prominently across the title page beneath the title and above the printed author name, which is the normal location for an author signature. It does not look like a printed facsimile from the photo; the line quality, uneven pressure, and placement suggest actual pen ink. Signature does appear consistent with "J. E. Tuhy" / John E. Tuhy, rather than an owner's signature. A biography of Samuel Hill, the eccentric Pacific Northwest businessman, road-builder, art patron, philanthropist, and creator of Maryhill Museum and the Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial. Tuhy's work remains an important biography of Hill and a useful title for readers interested in Pacific Northwest history, Columbia River history, transportation, philanthropy, and regional cultural landmarks.…

Add to basketHardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: NEAR FINE. Dust Jacket Condition: NEAR FINE. SIGNED and inscribed by the author on the FFEP: 'Greetings from Sam Hill country! [Signed] John Tuhy.' First Edition, First Printing. Just faintly thumbed, clean and tight otherwise with sharp corners; DJ tips a bit rubbed, price intact. This labor of love, written by a distinguished Portland pulmonologist in his retirment, remains the definitive biography of the quixotic PNW business tycoon. 'Sam Hill (1857?1931), founder of the Maryhill Museum of Art, was one of the most colorful and influential figures in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s. He was a successful businessman, world traveler, builder of monuments, and early advocate of paved roads. Hill commissioned the Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial to honor World War I dead from Klickitat County, Washington. The monument was dedicated in 1918?while the war was still rampant?and completed in 1929. He was also responsible for the construction of the Peace Arch in Blaine, Washington?recognizing the close ties between the United States and Canada. It was dedicated in 1921. At Maryhill, Hill employed engineer Samuel C. Lancaster (1864?1941) and spent three years and $100,000 of his own money building experimental roads on the property?so that skeptics could see the type of highways for which he was advocating. His activism eventually prompted the creation of state highway departments in Washington and Oregon. He was also a force behind construction of the Historic Columbia River Highway and the Interstate Bridge between Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington.' (From the Maryhill Museum website).…
