Published by National Foundation for American Youth, New York, 1940
Manuscript / Paper Collectible
8.5x11 inch handbill, printed one side; several small edge chips. Year of receipt (1941) penned at bottom of the reverse. Joint statement issued after the 1940 election by the heads of the Young Democrats, the Young Republicans, and the National Foundation for American Youth. "This is a call to the youth of America--to Young Democrats, Young Republicans and all young people whose first interest is their country. The election is over: let there be no bitterness in the hearts of the losers, no vindictiveness in the winners. Those who lost fought for an ideal just as tenaciously as those who won. The greatness that is American democracy comes of Americans' willingness to heed the voice of its minorities and the election just completed has given the country the largest minority in our national history. Without rancor, with consideration for all, we can maintain our separate ideals and separate beliefs and still work together as Americans first - party members second. Our nation has entered a crucial period in its existence. Before us lies a difficult time. We are threatened by an organized plan of world conquest. We are engaged in a race to build up our national defense, to show determined and fanatical would-be conquerors that America is the mightiest nation on earth, that awake to the danger around us we can swiftly arm ourselves at every point - we can outbuild, outfly and outfight any dictator on earth. Part of our defense program, too, calls for a fumigating of the lairs of the Fifth Column and the making of jobs for the unemployed lest emergency catch us unorganized and ineffective. These are all the tasks of youth and it is to youth that the nation now looks. Youth must set this example of unity so that our country and the way of free men in the world may continue. AMERICAN DEMOCRACY MUST SURVIVE!".
