these copies (we have more than those now listed) are actually unused new copies that have been stored in the California desert for many years and are now housed here in Mecosta, Michigan. We quote them as Very Good however instead of new. Nice copies. The blue decorative crushed cardboard wraps cover the Great Master's Letter - aka "the Maha Chohan" from the 1880's, Also Blavatsky's - Lucifer To the Archbishop of Canterbury, Greeting! and A Turkiesh Effendi On Christendom and Islam (a personal favorite) and T. Subba Row - Personal and Impersonal God and as well Morality and Pantheism the Theosophist (vol 5 #2 1883). Great stuff. 61 pages, NOTE that there are two typo errors corrected before printing apparently (see page 9 pic, all copies have the correction) and if I remember from my reading of my old copy decades ago there may be a few other uncorrected typos. A great book, even if only kept on the dashboard of your car for emergency reading.

On the outskirts of a town 30 miles from Istanbul, a master well-digger & his young apprentice are hired to find water on a barren plain. As they struggle in the summer heat, excavating w/o luck meter by meter, the two will develop a filial bond neither has known before--not the poor middle-aged bachelor nor the middle-class boy whose father disappeared after being arrested for politically subversive activities. The pair will come to depend on each other & exchange stories reflecting disparate views of the world. But in the nearby town, where they buy provisions & take their evening break, the boy will find an irresistible diversion. The "Red-Haired Woman", an alluring member of a traveling theater company, catches his eye & seems as fascinated by him as he is by her. The young man's wildest dream will be realized, but, when in his distraction a horrible accident befalls the well-digger, the boy will flee, returning to Istanbul. Only years later will he discover whether he was in fact responsible for his master's death & who the redheaded enchantress was. * ABOUT ORHAN PAMUK: ORHAN PAMUK won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006. His novel "My Name Is Red" won the 2003 IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. His work has been translated into more than sixty languages. "PAMUK has made his native city an indispensable literary territory, equal to Dostoyevsky's St. Petersburg, Joyce's Dublin, or Proust's Paris--a place where readers from all corners of the world can live another life, just as credible as their own." -from the Nobel Presentation Speech * HIGH PRAISE FOR ORPAN PAMUK: "Essential reading for our times: In Turkey, Pamuk is the equivalent of a rock star, guru, diagnostic specialist, & potential pundit. The Turkish public reads his novels as if taking its own pulse. -Margaret Atwood, NYTBR. "Pamuk in his dispassionate intelligence & arabesques of introspection suggests Proust." -John Updike, The New Yorker. Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Robert C. Olsson (Book Desisgn); John Gall (Cover Design); © VEER Gildo Spadoni/Photonica/Getty Images (Cover Photo); Jerry Bauer (Author Photo) (illustrator). 1st Vintage International Edition: July. 384 + xii + pp. A great, almost spotlessly clean copy! Solidly and tightly bound, essentially and nearly flawless copy with minimal internal and external wear and use. Copy with crisp pages, clean text, and light shelf wear. Smooth covers. Two pin holes on cover. Synopsis: Turkish novelist Pamuk (Snow) presents a breathtaking portrait of a city, an elegy for a dead civilization and a meditation on life's complicated intimacies. The author, born in 1952 into a rapidly fading bourgeois family in Istanbul, spins a masterful tale, moving from his fractured extended family, all living in a communal apartment building, out into the city and encompassing the entire Ottoman Empire. Pamuk sees the slow collapse of the once powerful empire hanging like a pall over the city and its citizens. Central to many Istanbul residents' character is the concept of hüzün (melancholy). Istanbul's hüzün, Pamuk writes, "is a way of looking at life that. is ultimately as life affirming as it is negating." His world apparently in permanent decline, Pamuk revels in the darkness and decay manifest around him. He minutely describes horrific accidents on the Bosphorus Strait and his own recurring fantasies of murder and mayhem. Throughout, Pamuk details the breakdown of his family: elders die, his parents fight and grow apart, and he must find his way in the world. This is a powerful, sometimes disturbing literary journey through the soul of a great city told by one of its great writers. 206 photos.

"chockful of sublimity & sin" -NYTBR) comes a SPELLBINDING tale of disparate yearnings--for love, art, power, & God--set in a remote Turkish town, where stirrings of political Islamism threaten to unravel the secular order. Following years of lonely political exile in Western Europe, Ka, a middle-aged poet, returns to Istanbul to attend his mother's funeral. Only partly recognizing this place of his cultured, middle-class youth, he is even more disoriented by news of strange events in the wider country: a wave of suicides among girls forbidden to wear their head scarves at school. An apparent thaw of his writer's curiosity--a frozen sea these many years--leads him to Kars, a far-off town near the Russian border & the epicenter of the suicides. No sooner has he arrived, however, than we discover that Ka's motivations are not purely journalistic; for in Kars, once a province of Ottoman & then Russian glory, now a cultural gray-zone of poverty & paralysis, there is also Ipek, a radiant friend of Ka's youth, lately divorced, whom he has never forgotten. As a snowstorm, the fiercest in memory, descends on the town & seals it off from the modern, westernized world that has always been Ka's frame of reference, he finds himself drawn in unexpected directions: not only headlong toward the unknowable Ipek & the desperate hope for love--or at least a wife--that she embodies, but also into the maelstrom of a military coup staged to restrain the local Islamist radicals, & even toward God, whose existence Ka has never before allowed himself to contemplate. In this surreal confluence of emotion & spectacle, Ka begins to tap his dormant creative powers, producing poem after poem in untimely, irresistible bursts of inspiration. But not until the snows have melted & the political violence has run its bloody course will Ka discover the fate of his bid to seize a last chance for happiness. Blending profound sympathy & mischievous wit, "Snow" illuminates the contradictions gripping the individual & collective heart in many parts of the Muslim world. But even more, by its narrative brilliance & comprehension of the needs & duties. HIGH PRAISE for "SNOW" : "Not only an ENGROSSING feat of tale-spinning, but ESSENTIAL reading for our times. "Snow" is eerily prescient, both in its analyses of fundamentalist attitudes & in the nature of the repression & rage & conspiracies & violence it depicts." -Margaret Atwood, NYTBR "Powerful. Astonishingly timely. A deft melding of political intrigue & philosophy, romance & noir." -Megan O'Grady, Vogue * ABOUT ORHAN PAMUK: ORHAN PAMUK won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006.
