Full vellum with very neatly handwritten title in brown ink on the spine. Covers have normal minor wear. The paper used for theend papers and blanks is a close match to the text paper but with slightly… wider chain lines. The first book is in Greek; the second de igne Lib. Eiusdem in Eundem Adnotatiunculae, with the date of 1553, and is the Latin translation. Except for a very slight bit of toning and very occasional foxing, the paper is clean, strong and unmarked. Inside front cover has the bookplate of Thomas Gaisford (1779-1855) , Dean of Christ Church, curator of the Bodleian and delegate of the Oxford University Press. The first separate edition of Theophrastus's treatise on fire , beautifully printed by Turnebe, a specialist in Greek textual criticism and Director of the Royal Press. Theophrastus studied under Plato and was Aristotle's successor at the Peripatetic school. He was interested in philosophy, especially in how it related to the natural world, and his works on botany are famous. Here, he looks at fire and tackles the idea of it as a "simple body" or first principle and seems to come to the conclusion -- contra Aristotle -- that fire cannot be an "element" because it relies on other principles for its existence. An important landmark of classical scholarship and printing, in the first separate edition -- in both Greek and Latin -- nicely printed, and in very good condition, with lovely provenance.
