A substantial and highly visual archive documenting the Florida Times-Union's Depression-era circulation contests for its newsboysculminating in a prize trip to Havana, Cuba, in 1934. Assembled by Phil Turner, circulation manager and supervisor of the newsboys, the archive captures both the mechanics of newspaper subscription drives and the myth-making used to motivate young carriers through illustrated broadsides, letters, incentives, and correspondence with civic authorities. More than 60 pieces total, including illustrated mimeographs, contest announcements, internal memos, Western Union telegrams, richly composed carrier-motivation letters, immigration documents, tourist invitations, and photographs (including the original Havana departure group portrait). Together they form a rare Depression-era portrait of youth labor culture, newspaper circulation strategy, and U.S.Cuba travel before the Batista era. Condition Original scrapbook leaves (disbound) containing mounted materials; additional loose sheets. Expected age toning and edge wear, but overall clean, legible, and well-preserved. Some broadsides display the original vibrant colors of their carrier-promotion artwork. Relationships / Provenance Compiled and saved by Phil Turner, circulation manager for the Florida Times-Union and chaperone for the 1934 Cuba trip. The illustrated carrier sheets represent a fascinating Depression-era parallel to modern marketing psychologyusing narrative, cartoon art, metaphor, and "gamified" incentives. The Cuba trip materials (advertising, financial sheets, immigration documents, tourism ministry correspondence) offer a valuable micro-history of pre-1959 cultural exchange and media-sponsored travel.
