Military aerodrome later temporary civil aerodrome, RNAS Aeroplane School, RFC | RAF Training Depot Station, 138 Squadron (Avro 504Bs & 504Es Later Bristol…F.2 Fighters). The first mention of this aerodrome is on 15th May 1915 when Flight Commander Hyde-Thomson (RNAS) was awarded Pilot Certificate No. 1245 flying a Bristol Biplane from here. He also listed flying a Wight Seaplane from CALSHOT. Between 1915 and 1919 it was used to train around 1,000 pilots before they were sent to Europe, shortly afterwards the aerodrome closed in 1919. This 'in-house' magazine named 'The Chingflier' had a short history and was published between October 1916 to February 1918. Contains 76 (including the covers) printed pages of text with two full-page colour plates [one is loose] by Flt. Comd. L. Irving, and Lieut. T. J. Offer, monochrome illustrations and photographs throughout, including full-page cartoons specially drawn for 'The Chingflier' by L. M. Ball, Charles E. Turner, L. Irving, F. W. Harrison, H. W. Potter, T. J. Offer, Edgar Grinsted, G. Mockford, Miss Doris Rink, F. R. Wicks,and Albert Hindle. Altogether, a fully comprehensive, enthusiastic guide book for Western travel, from Cleveland to Chicago, and all the way over the Rocky Mountains, indicating routes used by sundry major and minor railroad systems of the day. One section elaborates on the Wyoming Territory (pp. 214-232), with details on the growth of early Cheyenne. Interestingly enough, the ad leaf facing the title page gets to promote the author (T. G. The book includes 50 pages of advertisements from businesses in Indi…ana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming Territory, including the Union Pacific Railroad, "now open from Omaha to Benton . 350 miles nearer the gold and silver mines of Nevada, Idaho and Montana than any other line," plus an inserted plate with a hand-colored illustration of a Studebaker Wagon. Checklist of Chicago Anti-Fire Imprints, 1851-1871, 1414. Cloth worn at spine ends and corner tips, some bubbling and minor spotting to cloth, glue stains to front paste-down, a very good copy. Included are chapt…ers on early explorations in the West, railroads, steamboat travel, manufactures, and general capabilities and prospects for the West. Pages 213-232 are devoted to Wyoming, including an early description of Cheyenne and towns in the Black Hills. The last twenty pages contain ads (many of them illustrated) for merchants, real estate agents, attorneys, bankers, etc. from all over Nebraska, Wyoming Territory, Iowa, and Indiana. The colored frontispiece depicts a Studebaker Wagon. A lively western travel book. Howes lists a gazetteer of the St. Joseph valley by Turner published in 1867, but not the present work. CHICAGO ANTE-FIRE IMPRINTS locates only four copies (CSmH, DLC, IC, ICH). Scarce. CHICAGO ANTE-FIRE IMPRINTS 1414. GRAFF 4211. EBERSTADT 114:804. Original green cloth, spine gilt, edges red.
