Softcover/Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Author: Turney, John | Brand: Yale University Press UK SR | Edition: New e. | Number Of Pages: 304 | Release Date: 01-09-2000 | Details: Product Description Mary Shelley's Frankestein, a tale crafted two centuries ago 'to awaken thrilling horror', is a story that speaks to deep fears and desires that lie at the heart of our responses to biological progress. Tracing the history of the development of biological science and how it has been received and understood by the public over two centuries, Turney's intriguing book argues that the Frankenstein story governs much of today's debate about the onrushing new age of biotechnology. 'a serious and fascinating contribution to cultural history' Mary Warnock, Times Higher Education Supplement 'This is a fascinating book, interweaving accounts of literature and popular culture with accounts of the growth of modern biology.' John Polkinghorne, University of Cambridge. 'This is an important book - elegantly written - as it helps us to understand public attitudes to biological research.' Lewwis Wolpert, Times 'Combining the research skills of an historian with the writing skills of a fine journalist, Turney offers a penetrating history that sheds light on contemporary anxieties of the biotechnological age.' Dorothy Nelkin, New York University ' . a large and compelling subject, of surpassing interest at the present time and likely to remain so for many years to come.' James Secord, University of Cambridge Winner of the British Medical Association Book Prize, 1999. Jon Turney, formerly science editor of the Times Higher Education Supplement, is now senior lecturer in science communication in the department of science and technology studies at University College London. Review "This is an important book - elegantly written - as it helps us to understand public attitudes to biological research." -- Lewis Wolpert, The Times "With great glee and considerable perspicacity, the author embraces films like Jurassic Park, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and other evidence of the durability of the negative stereotype of the Man of Science . a painstakingly thorough book.". -- Andrew Barrow, The Spectator "With lucidity and serenity, Turney retells the Frankenstein story as a history of apocalyptic anxieties and preposterous prognostications." -- Paul Rabinow, University of California at Berkeley Synopsis Mary Shelley's Frankestein, a tale crafted two centuries ago 'to awaken thrilling horror', is a story that speaks to deep fears and desires that lie at the heart of our responses to biological progress. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Jacket sadly worn, with edge, chipping and short closed tears to top and botom of jacket and spine, surface of jacket extensively rubbed and worn, corners and folds rubbed, not price clipped (15s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a reasonable copy for its age. 228pp. Nicholas Monsarrat's short story collection commencing with 'The Ship that Died of Shame' where a former Navy gunboat is used for smuggling by ex servicemen down on their luck in post war society. In 'The Reconciliation' a husband employs private detectives but then changes his mind about a divorce once their findings are revealed, and in 'Licensed to Kill' a honeymoon soon turns into a manhunt when a former Royal Marine Commando employs the tricks of his trade. A further seven stories complete a volume which contains much to satisfy the reader, with many twists and turns and hard hitting drama. Nicholas Monsarrat (1910-79), was born in Liverpool and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He served in World War II, first as a member of an ambulance brigade and then as a member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. His lifelong love of sailing made him a capable naval officer, and he served with distinction on a series of small warships. Resigning his wartime commission in 1946, Monsarrat entered the diplomatic service. He turned to writing full time in 1959, settling on the Mediterranean island of Gozo. He died of cancer in 1979 and was buried at sea from a destroyer, off Portsmouth.
