Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. THIS IS AN UNCOMMON BOOK IN FINE CONDITION WITH A FINE DUST JACKET. THE AUTHOR JACK TUTHILL IS DESCRIBED ON THE DUST JACKET AS A "'JACK OF ALL TRADES." ' THE BOOK IS LISTED IN CLARENCC A. ANDREW'S BOOK "'CHICAGO IN STORY'" BY A SHORT PARAGRAFH STATING "A WRITER WHO IMITATES GEORGE ADE," PERHAPS BECAUSE THE FIRST TWO TALES ARE IN THE DIALECT OF AN UNEDUCATED BLACK PERSON. IN THIS READER'S OPINION, THE AUTHOR'S SHORT TALES ARE EXAMPLES OF THE SCHOOL OF REALISIM . THE SHORT TALES CONTAIN MULTIPLE DSISPARAGING "STREET" TERMS SUCH AS "NIGGER HEAVEN" FOR THE CHEAP FIVE CENT PLANK BOARD SEATS IN THE UPPERMOST BALCONY OF A THEATRE. THE AUTHOR CAME TO CHICAGO AS A CHILD IN 1901 AND THE TALES ARE OF THE SEAMY AND DARK SIDE OF EARLY 20 th CENTURY CHICAGO. THE TALES ARE WRITTEN WITH THE DIALECT OF THE DOWN TRODDEN STREET PERSON, THE DRUNKEN STUMBLE BUM, THE OVER-THE-HILL AND OUT OF LUCK FORMER PRIZE FIGHTER, AND ALMOST EVERY TALE EXEMPLIFIES THE SORDID AND DARK SIDED NATURE OF CHICAGO'S CRIMINAL ELEMENT DURING THE EARLY 20th CENTURY. THERE ARE DESCRIPTIONS OF ITS MICKEY FINN AND NICKLE BEER AND ALL YOU CAN EAT SALOONS. WANTON WOMEN, PETTY THIEVES BOTH MALE AND FEMALE, SKILLED PICK POCKETERS, CHINA TOWN'S OPIUM DENS AND DRUG ADDICTS, PRIVATE GAMBLING HOUSES WHERE YOU CANNOT WIN, HONKY-TONK BURLESQUE AND STRIP TEASE THEATRES, AD THE EARLY MAXWELL STREET MARKET RUN BY "GRIMY" JEWS". THERE ARE VIVIDLY DESCRIBED NEIGHBORHOODS AND THEIR ETHNIC IMMIGRANT RESIDENTS SUCH AS THE ITALIANS OF '"LITTLE ITALY" AND THE iRISH DOMINATED "PATCH," CHINATOWN AND ITS OPIUM DENS OF INIQUITY, AND SECRET GAMBLING HOUSES WHERE YOU CAN''T WIN. THERE IS A "HEY RUBE" CALL AND RIOT AT A TRAVELING CIRCUS THAT CAME TO TOWN WITH ITS STATE STREET PARADE, A CALLIOPE, WILD ANIMALS IN CAGES AND CLOWNS. THERE ARE PETTY CRIMINALS AND INNOCENT VICTIMS OF ALL SORTS OF CRIMES. THIS REALISM BOOK ABOUT THE DARK SIDE OF CHICAGO IS A MAJOR DIFFERENCE FROM THE USUAL CHICAGO HISTORY BOOK AND PERHAPS WHY IT IS SO UNCOMMON.
