Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. 8vo. Burgundy cloth with gilt lettering. 176pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, map and decorative endpapers. Near fine. Handsome, tight first edition of these laid back recollections and anecdotes prepared (to cite title page) "on his Ninetieth Birthday April 21, 1969" from the hard-hitting lawyer, civic activist and New York states attorney (1879-1971) who also ran as Republican for governor of that state in 1930, losing to Franklin D. Roosevelt. He boldly inscribes and signs the half-title page (on his 90th birthday!) in blue ballpoint "To my very dear / friend and colleague, / Thomas A Shaw, Jr., and / to his lovely wife / Charles H Tuttle / April 21, 1969." Shaw was an attorney with Breed, Abbott & Morgan in New York, and in later years Tuttle served as counsel emeritus there; he and Shaw served as co-counsel on many high-level cases together. Tuttle kept a summer home at Lake George, New York, and named Halcyon Press after this home.…

Contact seller2-star seller176p. with Supplement 94p. The first volume inscribed: "to my ever faithful Secretary, Claire Liske, from Charles H. Tuttle, April 21, 1969." From his appointment by President Coolidge to become a US Attorney for Southern New York to his crusades against corruption he ran for the governorship of New York in 1930 but was defeated by F.D.R. who was using it as a springboard to the Presidency. His later life he fought aginst racial discrimination and served as General Counsel for the National Council of Churches for two decades. He also was an early supporter of Billy Graham in the New York crusade of 1954. His latter chapters of the supplemental volume provide an update of his sharpness of mind and civic and spiritual interests even as he reached age 91. A remarkable person whose obituary appeared in the New York Times. A printed card by him is laid in within which appear several newspaper clippings.…
