Plain end-papers with neat inscription to verso: "Presented to Herbert by Aunt Catherine January 1867". The First Edition was published in the 1840s by Edward Lacey with fewer pages and possibly different illustrations, this edition was most likely published in the 1860s and not recorded in British Library. Nineteen stories are present, including two by "Miss Leslie of Philadelphia" (i.e. the famous American author Eliza Leslie): The Stolen Girl and the Tin-Man, an American Story, Founded on Fact, along with The Quaker Girl. Eliza Leslie is best known for her 1828 recipe book, her Vision of the Heavenly World and The Behaviour Book a Manual for Ladies (1854) - still in print today. The stolen girl concerns a Philadelphia farming family Micajah and Bulah Warner and their daughters Amy and Orphy. "The tin-man came blowing his horn to the steps of the porch [and] addressed the farmer's wife in the true nasal twang that characterizes the lower class of New Englanders." The Quaker Girl is called Clementine Selbury. Another, anonymous story is called The Young Soldier: a tale of the American War.
