On June 5 1918 while Great Britain was in the throws of World War One, Thomas Severn, undermanager of Mapperley Pit also known as Simon Fields Colliery, in Derbyshire, stepped into a cage at 6am and descended underground into the bowels of the earth to start his working shift. He was last seen entering a slip road at 12.15 pm and he was never seen again. He vanished completely; his body, the map he was carrying and his stick were never found. This book sheds some light on the incident.
