Daten unbekannt), "ein überaus fruchtbarer theologischer Schriftsteller, der 1615 nach seiner eigenen Angabe schon 79 Bücher geschrieben und "denselben so vil tausendt gedruckte exemplaria" hat verbreiten lassen. Nachdem er drei Jahre lang Conrector in Jülich, darauf vier Jahre hindurch Professor der Philosophie und Beredsamkeit in Köln gewesen, berief ihn das Osnabrücker Domcapitel Anfang 1595 (Bestallung vom Dienstag nach Judica) als Rector an die dortige Domschule. Diese war seit der Zeit des Augsburger Interims (1548) von katholischen und evangelischen Schülern besucht worden; jetzt aber, als der neue streng katholische Rector die früheren Lehrer durch andere - jesuitische nannte sie das Volk - ersetzte, die lutherischen Schulbücher abschaffte, den Katechismus des Canisius einführte und die evangelischen Einwohner auch anderweitig verletzte, nahmen letztere fast sämmtlich ihre Söhne aus der Domschule und erhielten am 18. October 1595 vom Stadtrath die bereits 1583 für den Fall eines confessionellen Zwistes ausgebaute Kirchspielsschule zu St. Marien als neue Rathsschule (später Rathsgymnasium) überwiesen. Da den neuen Lehrern der Domschule mancherlei Unglimpf widerfuhr und an Schutz nicht zu denken war, forderte der Rector des Laurentianischen Gymnasiums zu Köln die von dort abgegebenen Lehrer wieder zurück, während T. selbst das Pastorat zu St. Petri in Köln in Aussicht gestellt wurde . Die Klagen über T. dauerten fort: hauptsächlich legte man ihm zur Last, daß er unpassende Collaboratoren anstelle und den Schülern zu viel Geld abnehme . Schließlich konnte sich auch das Domcapitel der Ueberzeugung nicht mehr verschließen, daß unter Tympe's Rectorat ein rechtes Gedeihen der Domschule nicht zu erwarten sei, und da T. die Unzufriedenheit des Capitels verschiedentlich zu spüren hatte, legte er im Winter 1608 die schon seit einem Jahrzehnt ihm gründlich verleidete Stelle nieder und übernahm das Rectorat des v. Detten'schen Collegs in seiner Vaterstadt Münster" (P. Bahlmann in ADB). - Einband etwas berieben, St.a.T., stellenweise leicht fleckig und gebräunt, gutes Exemplar in einem dekorativen zeitgenöss. Ohne fliegende Vorsätze. Titelblatt mit dem Vermerk "M[o]n[ast]e[r]ij Neustatt" in brauner Tinte. 2. (deutlich erweiterte) Ausgabe des bereits 1611 unter dem Titel "Admirandum Vindictae Divinae Theatrum" erschienenen Werks, in dem christliche Laster und Tugenden anhand von entsprechenden "historischen" Beispielen erläutert werden. Der lateinische Text wird vereinzelt durch Übersetzungen einzelner Sätze ins Deutsche ergänzt. Die Plattenprägung auf dem Vorderdeckel ist aufgrund starker Bereibung nicht klar zu erkennen. Auf dem Rückendeckel ist Christus Salvator dargestellt (p001382). In Bezug auf diese Platte vermutet Haebler die zugehörige Werkstatt im Kurfürstentum Sachsen (Haebler I, 415-416). Die Porträtmedaillons zeigen u. a. Caspar Heidanus oder Kaspar Hedio und Jan Hus (w002862; Haebler I, 54). Da der hier vorliegende Reformationseinband augenscheinlich in das ausgehende 16. Jh. datiert, wurde er offensichtlich für diesen deutlich späteren Text eines katholischen Theologen wiederverwendet. Matthäus Tympius (1566 in Heessen - 1616 in Münster) wirkte nach einem Studium der Theologie in Köln in Jülich, Köln und Osnabrück (dort als Rektor der Domschule). Ab 1608 war er Rektor des von Dettenschen Kollegs in Münster (ADB39 (1895), S. 53-55; Lebensdaten Wikipedia). VD17 32:652121W.
