softcover. square 8vo. softcover. xvi, 509 pages. First edition. Co-published with Pear Tree Publishing. This is the story of an iconic device for hot metal typesetting. Author Frank Romano has dug deep to discover more than has ever been published about the people, the company, and the machine that established typographic tastes. From the Museum of Printing: Frank Romano's latest book is now available! It is called History of the Ludlow Typograph and covers the remarkable tale of a device that is still in use by letterpress printers around the world today. Romano writes about the people, the company, the machine, and the type library that established typographic tastes. Born at the beginning of the 20th century, the active production lifespan of the Ludlow Typograph lasted just over 80 years, but its impact has continued. In the last decade of the 20th century as typography evolved from metal to film to digital, many of the fonts in use were based on hot metal libraries. One of the major trendsetters for typographers was the Ludlow Typograph. At 535 pages and with over 400 illustrations, this book digs deeper into the history of the Ludlow Typograph than any previous book. Ludlow Typograph (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Ludlow Typograph Company. No year or edition stated, but likely circa 1930. A VG + hardcover copy with no dust jacket as issued. Very light soiling to blue cloth boards with silver and red art deco design. Light age toning to page edges. Pages are otherwise clean, bright, and unmarked. Binding is square and tight. Organized into 16 sections, by typeface, this is a gorgeous, wonderully designed book. Mostly done in orange and black colors (and in general, black type), the book nevertheless surprises with occasion splashes of color (for instance, violet, yellow, green, blue, pale blue, etc) making this feel more like an art object than a simple typeface book. There's an art deco feel to the book cover but the chapters inside, while artfully presented, mostly reference examples from advertising and various kinds of printing (like newspaper printing). A gorgeous, fascinating document worthy of coffee table display.

Zusammen 8 SS. auf 9 Bll. Gr.-4to. An den deutschen Maler und Medienkünstler Jürgen Claus (geb. 1935), u. a. über seine Arbeit, ein Filmprojekt, eigene Ausstellungen, ein Manuskript, das er bearbeitet zurücksendet, ein Magazin, in dem ein Interview mit ihm erschienen sei, u. a. m.: [.] the movie is a very sad story. it would take a long time to explain all the circumstances. but, in brief, atlantic richfield offered to sponsor the film by advancing the money, which the producer had to match equally. however, he used up the entire amount of $ 35,000 and has not paid the laboratory, has not paid all the people who worked for him, has not even paid his hotel in aspen, and does not answer the phone anymore. we have secured at least the original film by paying what he owed the laboratory. now we have the film but not the complete sound track and the film has only been two-thirds edited. all together this means more money before we have the product and he was supposed to distribute the film. we will have to look after that ourselves. it is all in the hands of atlantic richfield who will now sue the producer and after that we will see what happens [.]" (a. d. Br. v. 7. Februar 1974). Jeweils auf privatem Briefpapier; tls. im linken Rand gelocht (keine Textberührung).
