First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Hiroshige (illustrator). 1st Edition. This is the first edition of this classic work. In Japanese only; there is no English text in the book. Printed and bound in Japan. Published by Iwanami Shoten, Tokyo, in 1930. 10 x 7.75 inches. Blue coarse linen binding, the spine faded to greenish-blue, with very faded gilt-stamped Japanese lettering to the spine. Gently bumped spine head and tail and corners, with very slight abrading to the bottom of the spine and the lower corners. Generally a very clean binding. Note: one signature of several pages, near the center of the text block, is cracked but not loose. The text block is still holding nicely and has integrity. Decorative paper pastedowns and FEPs. Many hundreds of pages. Numerous B&W illustrations throughout, some full-page and most on coated stock, including the frontispiece reproducing Hiroshige's famous self-portrait. Moderate age toning to all pages. Rated a Good copy. Scarce as a first edition. 5 lbs. weight. The most comprehensive reference work on the oeuvre of the ukiyo-e master Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858). While many consider this the most important book on Hiroshige, its accuracy as to certain details or assumptions has sometimes been challenged. For instance, "three ukiyo-e experts insist the accepted idea that Hiroshige reached Kyoto is not based on hard facts. The notion developed from the book 'Hiroshige' written by Minoru Uchida in 1930. [They] say there is no record to validate claims made in the book. Uchida based his theory on a newspaper story that said one of Hiroshige's disciples in the Meiji Era (1868-1912) had actually heard about the journey from the master himself. 'I always thought something was strange with the story that Hiroshige went to Kyoto passing through all 53 stops. I guess Uchida must have thought Hiroshige was already a popular artist when he did these works.' Hiroshige, in fact, only became popular after he published the Tokaido Gojusantsugi series." A deluxe limited edition of 100 was issued by the same publisher in 1932, including a section in English, and with six color plates. Another edition apparently was published in 1978.
