Tanja, die Duits spreekt, wordt vaak als vertaalster ingeschakeld en ontmoet zo de Nederlander Rieko Veen. De twee worden verliefd. Wanneer de geallieerden in 1945 Duitsland bevrijden, vertrekken ze samen naar Nederland en trouwen op 22 juni 1945, precies vier jaar na de oorlog in Rusland. Het verhaal, gebaseerd op interviews met Tanja, biedt een oprecht en soms gedetailleerd verslag van haar ontberingen en de kracht van haar geloof in de mensheid. De positieve verteltrant maakt het verhaal toegankelijk voor jongeren vanaf dertien jaar.
