Roll, Jordan, Roll is a photographic account of the Gullah people, the descendants of enslaved Africans living in the coastal areas of the southern United States. Begun in 1929, Ullman's project spanned several years, producing a series of portraits that are "rich in tonal range and unified in soft focus.[and] reveal a distinct photographic account, attuned to the dignity and grace of Gullah people" (MoMA). Roll, Jordan, Roll is now regarded as one of the finest photography books of the twentieth century and is praised for its portrayal of Black subjects as dignified individuals rather than stereotypes. Julia Peterkin, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1929 for her novel Scarlet Sister Mary, provided the text for the book. Fine.
