"This work presents in the form of an alphabetical dictionary the Old and Middle Chinese word material reconstructed by B. Karlgren and contained in his epoch-making work Grammata Serica, 1940, reissued in considerably revised form in 1957. Owing to the arrangement of the words in Karlgren's book according to script form and not to sounds, it is not possible from it to obtain a coherent view of the Old Chinese vocabulary. In the present work an attempt is made to create such a possibility by listing in alphabetical order the 8398 Old Chinese, i. e. pre-Han, words found in GSR, and thus also facilitating comparison with more recent reconstructions of Old and Middle Chinese.
