First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Edinburgh: T. Nelson and Sons, Paternoster Row, 1875. First Edition. The Royal School Series. Illustrated with engravings. 12mo, full black morocco binding, no imprinting on covers or spine, 416 pp. Good; front hinges cracked, spine end wear and corners bumped, endpaper foxing, and very thorough - and delightful - nibbed pen cursive artful personal entries on the endpapers by Miss Betsy Yetts, the owner, who paid 2 shillings for this book on Monday, November 17, 1879. Elizabeth F.L. Yetts by that time resided at 122 Corporation Street in Belfast, having recently left her home near The Holy Island, Beal, Lindisfarne, Northumberland, where she was a parishioner of W.W.F. Keeling (see separate ephemera listing), who would later author "Lindisfarne or Holy Island: Its History and Associations" (1889). On the rear free endpaper of this volume, Betsy artfully wrote: "Don't steal this book for fear of shame / for in it lies the owner's name / and god will say at the last day / where is the book you stole away - Betsy Yetts." Apparently thought up by her, based on a correction and her signing of it. But as part of Parson Keeling's flock, albeit translocated at the time, she should have capitalized "God" - and didn't. Speaking of shame. The Royal Readers were a series of general readers, probably for high-school-age students, with in-depth content on about everything, from science and history to poetry, and illustrated with engravings. This example is particularly charming, though in well-loved good only condition. Maybe Good Plus. See scans. L85.
