Current fifth collection of poems by Under was published in 1923 under the influence of German Expressionsism. In 1920 she finished an anthology of translations from contemporary German poetry, the largest number of which were expressionists, and after that adopted new European patterns such as lexical experiments, stylistic registers and the lyric strategies, to her own verse. Under's poetry changed radically in its outlook and early poems about love and personal experiences had replaced with poems marked by criticism of social relations, post-war anxiety, inner conflict, preoccupation with hopelessness and death, and search for a human heritage. Marie Under (1883 1980) was one of the greatest Estonian poets. In 1917 she became a member of Siuru literary group, which influenced her views and style. Volumes of Siuru period appeared before WWI were mostly Expressionist and Futurist genre, characterized by sensual treatment of love and over eroticism, arousing excitement and protest. Postwar, in the course of time Under s writing showed a growing disillusionment with life and human nature, and she draw attention to the conflict between individual and society, as well as between god and evil. Under s total oeuvre amounts to around four hundred poems published in thirteen collections, she received a number of literary prizes, was nominated for the Nobel prize in literature no less than eight times and her works translated into many languages.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Estonian language. Octavo 13 x 19 cm. Weight 120 g. Wrappers, 85 [1] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Minor creases across cover corners, minor tears (less than 1 cm) on upper and bottom front cover border along the spine fold, light foxing spots on the cover; internally small staining on the fore-edge margins of six leaves, occasional foxing spots. The poetry collection comprises 39 Under's poems dating from the first half of 1930s., which may be regarded to the poetry of thought, rather than to the poetry of feelings as her previous works, however, it is not based on abstract discourse, but on symbolic images. The final victory over deeply harassing inner conflicts is achieved in these poems, a book of stillness after storms, though not of "calm of mind, all passion spent," since Under's passions remain strong. Yet here she attains serenity and a sympathy for all living things ever deeper than before, but short moments of happiness contrast with dark visions of frozen waters and chained wind. This sympathy, pessimism and the newly won self-discipline and controlled strenght of mind are the main aspects of current collection. Marie Under (1883-1980) considered the finest female poet in the Estonian language. Under's development from an exciting, highly emotional impressionism and an eruptive expressionism to a serene presentation of deeply pondered and felt experience provided Estonia during her time of independence with the richest store of poetry she possessed. This was unmistakably major poetry, the product of a remarkable personality. Linocut book cover illustration created by talented young graphic artist Hando Mugasto (1907-1937). He studied at the Pallas Art School under Eduard Wiiralt and Ado Vabbe. In creation cultivated mainly linocut following geometrical shapes of the Estonian Artists' Group, but successfully developed other graphic techniques as well. Very seldom seen first edition.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Estonian language. Octavo 13 x 19 cm. Weight 170 g. Wrappers, 93 [1] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Fore-edge of front cover is wrapped and slightly frayed, small creases across corners of front cover, spine and cover to the edges show light yellowing; internally perfect. Under's most significant period of literary creativity commenced with the publication of the sixth collection of poems "Hääl varjust". It is among her best in its entirety, where realism, symbolism, expressionism, and also personal experience and vision are united. Journalist Rudolf Sirge highlighted the great philosophy and maturity. The central theme of the volume is negation of the dominant social order with its social misery, cruelty of power, false beliefs and prejudices. Under employed religious images to convey her feelings of pain, delirium, and suffering - a dark angel of death, prophets stumble over words, also paralles sleep with death and beds with coffins. Surprisingly, one by one came out two volumes, one of which "Hääl varjust" is the most grim and pessimist, another "Rġġm ühest ilusast päevast" is the most joyful and optimist among poet's creations. Book is decorated with seven drawings printed on separate pages by Nikolai Triik, made in his unique symbolist manner. Marie Under's (1883-1980) total oeuvre amounts to around four hundred poems published in thirteen collections. Her themes range from nature of pantheism to biblical legends, her tone from the erotic to the indignant. Under constantly employs metaphor, comparison and symbol, and images of wind, sea, and fire. Her neoromantic verse, at times impressionistic and philosophical, conveys a suffering both personal and universal, an aesthetic ecstasy and essentially extroverted spirituality. Under's joy for life is balanced by a sometimes somber introspection in poetry imbued with the alive, open senses of Estonia's most important poet. Nikolai Triik (18841940) one of the most influential modernist painters of the beginning of the 20th century whose work led to a breakthrough in Estonian art. Triik's creative work, tending to symbolism and expressionism, brings together both nationalist aspirations and international influences.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Estonian language. Octavo 14 x 20 cm. Weight 140 g. Wrappers, 76 [2] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Creases across front cover corners, wrapped fore-edge of the cover, coves shows minor foxing; internally some occasional foxing spots and few fingerprints. With a current collection to the Under's poetry came a new kind of optimism after feelings of pain, delirium, and suffering inspired by the horrors of War. Poems' pantheistic tenderness was compared to William Blake and, philosophically, Lao Ze. Although, German Expressionism influence of post-war period still remains strong, new poetry is tending to the life and light. In the brilliant nature lyric are crystallized the main features of Undery's talent - having become classically calm poetry form, rich humanness born of the contrary feelings of happiness and worry proper to human nature, which expressed through the depictions of nature mood. Under's poems accompanied with amazing art deco cover design and eight illustrations on separate pages by Eduard Wiiralt. Literary critic Hanno Kompus has written that, emergence of this book remained "just one creative meeting of two great and unique." Illustrations were made while the artist was living in Paris, where his Expressionist sensibility converted into spirits of Art Deco and New Objectivity. Marie Under (1883-1980) the greatest and most beloved Estonian poets of the 20th century. Under was many times a nominee for the Nobel Prize for Literature. Her poems have all become classics of Estonian poetry. Under changed poetic tradition radically several times. In her youthful lyrics of the Siuru movement period her sensual celebration of erotic love made her the best-known Estonian neoromantic poet. The first turn in her poetry was in 1920, when death began to dominate over the beautiful growth of life, and the author cried for justice, help and pity, creating the most realistic and sharply drawn city scenes in Estonian poetry. After the First World War, expressionist German poetry had a great impact on her with its intensity and strength of image, prevailed feelings of pain, delirium, and suffering. At th end of 1920s dark visions became varied with short moments of all-embracing love, and the form of these lyrics gives them a dimension of eternity. During the early years of World War II, when Estonia was taken over by the USSR and then occupied by the Germany, Under wrote about the suffering and the resistance of her people. In 1944 she went nto exile to Sweden. Eduard Wiiralt (1898-1954) is considered as the most remarkable master of Estonian graphic art, best of all known for his original surrealist works.
