L'Union Agricole Calédonienne, association fondée en 1894, avait pour objectif de promouvoir la Nouvelle-Calédonie en France métropolitaine. Son objectif était d'attirer des marchés, des capitaux et de nouveaux colons afin de supplanter l'économie pénale de l'île, tandis que les autochtones serviraient les Européens. Un chapitre est ainsi consacré à "la transportation" et "relégation" en Nouvelle-Calédonie (pp. 51-68) : il expose les arguments en défaveur de la colonisation par le bagne et explicite crûment la problématique du travail des relégués. Des femmes "mises à disposition des colons" : "Presque toutes ont continué et continuent leur ancienne vie de débauche [.] Elles font la navette entre Nouméa et l'Île des Pins, aux frais des engagistes." Des "relégués mâle" : "[ils] se conduisent un peu mieux. Il ne faudrait pas trop leur gratter l'épiderme pour s'apercevoir qu'ils ont encore dans les veines le même sang vicié qui les a fait exclure de la société." Quant aux Kanaks, dont un chapitre expose les moeurs et le caractère, ils représentent : "un passé [.] L'avenir est aux immigrants, aux colons". Bel exemplaire.
