At the time this British engineer visited Australia to research this book the country was in the grip of one of its periodic and long-lasting droughts, however, the clouds of a Pacific war were already gathering. His is a fascinating on-the-ground examination of this vast and then, and still, largely empty country. His findings on its 1930s handicaps and problems, rivers, deserts, rugged out-back individuals, water shortages, tropical north and a looming peril, provide a fascinating flash-back and recall some lessons unlearned. 288 pages including index, 17 chapters, 23 b/w photos (4.5cm tear top plate at p80). Green hard covers with gilt spine titles VG with tiny nick front top edge, light wear spine hinges and extremities, neatly inked name top FFEP, textblock otherwise VG+.
