Ebenso ist seit dieser Zeit die Vorstellung verbreitet, daß der körperliche Ausdruck ein universell verständliches Zeichensystem ist, das keiner weit…eren kulturellen Kodierung unterliegt. Vorstellungen dieser Art sind seit der Romantik und dann wieder im 20. Jahrhundert von den Theoretikern der Pantomime vorgebracht worden. Tatsächlich jedoch hatte sich die Körpersprache bereits als ein kulturell kodiertes Zeichensystem erwiesen, das Gegenstand von Interpretationen und damit auch von Mißverständnissen ist.Für das Bemühen um ein Verständnis fremder Kulturen implizierte dies vor allem, daß nicht nur die fremde Sprache, sondern auch die fremden Zeichen der körperlichen Kommunikation beschrieben und erlernt werden können. Dies war eine Einsicht der Neuphilologie, seit sie im Ausklang der Romantik immer deutlicher als eine allgemeine Wissenschaft von den Systemen verstanden wurde, mit denen die Menschen Gedanken ausdrücken können.Der Einsicht in die kulturelle und historische Kodiertheit der Körpersprache folgend legten mit den hier versammelten Studien zur Körpersprache der romanischen Völker drei deutsche Romanisten bzw. Ethnologen des 20. Jahrhunderts ihre Bemühungen zu einer Beschreibung und zu einem umfassenden Verständnis des Körperverhaltens in unseren romanischen Nachbarkulturen vor. Diese Studien stellen, insbesondere hinsichtlich der von ihnen erfaßten Phänomene, bis auf den heutigen Tag nicht überholte Beiträge zum Verständnis der romanischen Kulturen in ihren vielleicht charakteristischsten Artikulationen, ihrer geradezu sprichwörtlich reichen Gestikulation dar.
