Kyiv: Derzhavne Vydavnytstvo Ukrainy, 1928. Octavo (23.8 × 16 cm). Original decorative wrappers on yellow stock, printed in black and green; 169, [2] pp. Wrappers somewhat worn and soiled; front wrapper creased; light nicks to overlapping wrapper edges; internally about very good. Scarce Ukrainian anthology of foreign short stories and tales in translation, with works by authors including Henri Barbusse, Jules Romains, Paul Morand, Pierre Mille, Grazia Deledda, Stefan Zweig, Carl Sternheim, Kasimir Edschmid, Philip Gibbs, Sherwood Anderson and Theodore Dreiser. The translators include H. Iar, M. Deinar, O. Hordon, O. Kyrychyns'kyi, M. Ivanov, O. Burhardt, V. Hladko and E. Kariakin, M. Lysychenkov, and M. Ivchenko. No compiler is credited. Little is known about the designer of the wrapper, who appears to have been on the faculty of the Kyiv Art Institute (KKhI) in the 1920s, where he would have worked alongside such noted artists as Kazimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin, Viktor Pal'mov, and Mykhailo Boichuk. Initially founded as the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, the Institute became known as the Ukrainian Bauhaus in Europe in the 1920s. As of December 2023, KVK, OCLC only show two non-microform holdings, at Harvard and Cleveland Public Library.
