Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The first Japanese translation of Benjamin Disraeli`s 1837 novel `Henrietta Temple`. This book is also notable as the only Japanese translation ever published of `Henrietta Temple`. The translator, Ushiyama Kakudo, was an early Meiji period novelist. In 1880s Japan political changes were afoot, and Japanese authors interested in politics were spurred on by foreign novelists like Disraeli and Bulwar-Lytton (Matthew, 1989). Evidently Ushiyama was one such author, and, incidentally, also wrote `Nihon no Mirai` [`The Future of Japan`] (first published 1884), considered one of the earliest examples of a science fiction novel (or a `Japanese future novel`) by a Japanese author. Includes 5 leaves of Western-style lithographic illustrations. Original hardcover binding, slightly chipped and edgeworn, foot lightly stained, one or two tiny wormholes.
