Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the history of Cuba under Spanish rule, providing an intimate look at how the island was governed from the seat of power. It begins with the appointment of the Captain-General and explores the structure of the government and its officials, as well as the extent of their authority. The author discusses the relationship between Cuba and Spain, the taxation schemes, the military presence, and the laws restricting speech and assembly. The book also examines the system of racial discrimination and the impact of slavery on the social order. The author argues that this despotic governance hindered the progress of the island and ultimately led to the Cuban Revolution, which began in 1868.
