Hard bound. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: new. First English Edition. Originally published in 1926, this is the first study of the temple that many consider the crown jewel of the entire Angkor Wat complex. Written a decade after the temple's rediscovery, these three groundbreaking essays by eminent French scholars disc…uss its architecture, iconography, history, and dating. The section on the Sanskrit and Khmer inscriptions found at the site is an invaluable tool for understanding this period of Khmer history and for illuminating aspects of its religious and daily life. Line drawings and photographs illustrate the study. Indispensable for the specialist, the volume will also appeal to the general reader interested in Southeast Asian architecture, history, and religion. First English translation of 1926 French edition. 228 pp., 78 pp. b&w illustr. (Heavy and oversize book - orders outside of Canada may require additional postage.) Size: 37 x 27 cm.

Strong and bright, some mild scuffing and scratching of the leather in places; internally clean and fresh, edges speckled red, armorial bookplate to front flyleaf. #778 of a limitation of 1500, illustrated throughou…t with woodcuts. A very good, handsome copy in an institutional or private library binding. A fascinating examination of the Tibetan Buddhist equivalent of what westerners might call Mystery plays, from one of the first Western scholars to explore Tibetan culture on the ground. Bacot was the first scholar to pay close attention to Tibetan grammar and linguistic traditions, and worked on translations of numerous ancient Tibetan works of literature, with the support and collaboration of Tibetan scholars like Gendun Chompel. Although published in 1921, no significant English translation was made until 1990.
