Condition: Very Good. 8vo softcover 134pp index, b/w illus. very good. Vache provides a musical biography of African American pianist and bandleader Hopkins (1903-84). Basing his account on Hopkins's unpublished diary and recollections of the pianist's contemporaries, the author recounts the bandleader's education at Howard University and his breakthrough as musical director of Josephine Baker's first European tour. He describes Hopkins's heyday in such New York clubs as the Savoy (1930-31), the Roseland (1932-34), and the Cotton Club (1935); more difficult times during the 1950s and 1960s; and his resurgence during the 1970s. Though seldom placing Hopkins within a historical context, Vache offers a well-written, concise, fast-paced survey of his musical career and includes a useful discography. The book will appeal to big band jazz fans.n- David Szatmary, Univ. of Washington, SeattlenCopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
