Teki Odulok (1906-1938) is recognized as the founder of Yukaghir literature. The Yukaghir are a Siberian ethnic group living in the Kolyma Basin who speak an endangered language, subsumed by Yakut and Russian. Odulok was educated at the Ethnographic Department of Leningrad University. He subsequently participated in a scientific expedition in Kolyma and soon emerged as an author extolling the Soviet system. Writing under the pseudonym of Nikolai Spiridonov, Odulok was the first ethnic Siberian to be recognized both in the USSR and abroad, where his work was translated into several languages. He was accused of espionage and executed in 1938. Artwork by Valentin Kurdov (1905-1989) who studied at VKhUTEIN under Pavel Filonov and Petrov-Vodkin, and under Malevich at GINKhUK (Petrograd State Institute of Artistic Culture). OCLC locates three holdings of this title in North America (Texas A&M, N. Ill Univ, McGill). A near fine copy.
