A l'âge de sept ans, Claudio Abbado assiste à un concert à la Scala de Milan : Antonio Guarnieri dirige les Nocturnes de Debussy. Un passage le bouleverse particulièrement, et il se demande qui est ce petit homme debout face à l'orchestre, et qui, d'un geste de la main, semble capable de déchaîner des sons extraordinaires et de les moduler selon sa volonté. Le soir même, dans son journal, il note qu'un jour lui aussi dirigera cette musique. Claudio Abbado raconte son enfance dans une famille où tout le monde est musicien. Il raconte aussi son apprentissage de chef d'orchestre, qui commence par cette découverte : le pouvoir d'Antonio Guarnieri n'était pas de l'ordre du surnaturel, mais venait d'une connaissance très approfondie de l'oeuvre et des instruments. Et pourtant, après des mois et des mois de travail, c'est bien une forme de magie qui opère le soir du concert.
