Puis, c est un verrou très exposé sur une frontière contestée entre le comté de Chalon, qui est au duc Bourgogne, et le Mâconnais, qui est au roi de France. C est précisément cela qui lui vaut de fréquentes destructions : il ressent les répliques des séismes qui agitent Paris et Dijon. Le Gros-Chigy est une source importante pour une modélisation d analyse des châteaux de Bourgogne et des régions voisines. Un grand donjon-résidence du XIVe siècle est reconnaissable sous une stratigraphie de modifications du XVe au XIXe siècle. Il conserve une extraordinaire halle d entrée voûtée (maintenant en sous-sol). Au XVe siècle, le château est complété par une très grande enceinte susceptible d accueillir une petite troupe ou de servir de refuge aux paysans du village voisin. A la même époque, le logis seigneurial est abaissé, mais puissamment fortifié, également vers l intérieur de la cour, par un fossé, une porte-tour à pont-levis et un nouveau donjon-beffroi carré couronné de mâchicoulis. Il propose ainsi un type de mutation qui invite à regarder différemment nombre de maisons-fortes. Grâce aux ruptures provoquées par ses multiples destructions violentes, au moins quatre en une centaine d années, entre 1361 et 1477, il fournit un catalogue de formes datées : appareils, postes de tir (à grandes fentes en 1450, à petites mires en 1480), hourds (encore en usage en 1450/60) mâchicoulis (apparaissant en 1480), modénatures, dispositions du plan. Toutes ces modifications sont parsemées d armoiries. Des peintures murales de diverses époques décorent salles et plafonds. L analyse détaillée des moulures des portes et des cheminées est une leçon sur l évolution des modénatures entre le milieu du XVe et le milieu du XVIe siècle. Enfin, il faut pointer l attention vers un local tout à fait étonnant conservé près de l entrée. Une curieuse salle à trois nefs est sous voûtes d arêtes appuyées sur des colonnes monolithes. On est impressionné par l harmonie de ses proportions et par sa monumentalité. Ce n est qu une écurie ! mais son modèle a été dessiné par Léonard de Vinci.

Il conserve trois architectures qui apportent une contribution notable à la connaissance de l'évolution des défenses, des habitations castrales et de la grammaire des styles de la Bourgogne méridionale. Le château roman de Marigny est une création des comtes de Chalon vers 1100. Il a été transformé pendant la Guerre de Cent-Ans, dans le dernier tiers du XIVe siècle, puis amputé après la Ligue. Mais une modélisation de son aspect originel est possible par la comparaison avec trois autres grands châteaux de Saône-et-Loire qui possèdent des éléments dont la disposition est similaire. L'architecture la plus ancienne conservée est un donjon-logis de quatre niveaux, résidence du capitaine-châtelain, défendant l'accès. Une disposition semblable se voit encore à Berzé, Brandon et Pierreclos. L'analyse de cet édifice a fourni des renseignements sur le déroulement du chantier de construction et offre un intéressant catalogue de fenêtres du dernier quart du XIIe et du premier quart du XIIIe siècle. On y voit aussi son agencement intérieur intact du XIVe siècle. De cette époque, il conserve une cheminée, un plafonnage et surtout le rare mécanisme en bois d'un pont-levis. Le tronçon d'enceinte préservé est l'oeuvre d'Aymeri Meudon, capitaine de Compagnie, homme de guerre expérimenté averti des questions de défense. En 1366, il a acheté le château ruiné au duc de Bourgogne. Puis, pendant près d'un quart de siècle, il a appliqué ici son savoir en accumulant des équipements dignes des plus grandes places de guerre, alors que Marigny n'était plus dès lors qu'une maison-forte. L'enceinte centrée, de dimension beaucoup plus réduite que celle du XIIe siècle, a reçu des flanquements carrés et de précoces meurtrières cruciformes pour armes à feu. Puis, elle a été complétée par un flanquement circulaire commandant l'accès à une « casemate » et à un archétype de contre-mine. Un logis seigneurial prend le relais du donjon dans sa fonction résidentielle (ce qui a évité la disparition des fenêtres romanes). Des remaniements dans la première moitié du XVe et le deuxième quart du XVIe siècle ont laissé un répertoire de moulures du gothique flamboyant. Au total, Marigny présente un bel ensemble médiéval que les restaurateurs du XIXe siècle ont respecté. '' ***************************** PH CASTRUM.
