Zijn carrière doorkruist echter een turbulente halve eeuw schilderkunst; hij ontwikkelt zich vanuit de academisch geïnspireerde Antwerpse periode via het naturali…sme tot een bijzonder persoonlijk impressionisme. Emile Claus groeide op in een eenvoudig milieu en het kostte hem veel moeite om zijn omgeving te overtuigen van zijn artistieke kwaliteiten. Uiteindelijk effende de componist Peter Benoit (1834-1901) - een streekgenoot - voor hem de weg naar de Antwerpse Academie (1869-1874). Ondanks goede resultaten deed hij niet mee aan de Prijs van Rome. Zijn eerste tentoonstelling vond plaats te Gent in 1874, onder het goedkeurend oog van Nicaise de Keyser (1813-1887), de directeur van de Antwerpse academie, in wiens atelier hij op dat moment werkzaam was. Claus verlengde zijn verblijf in Antwerpen en werd er beïnvloed door kunstenaars van de zgn. grijze Antwerpse school. In deze periode kreeg hij ook officiële opdrachten van de stad. Bij de Antwerpse bourgeoisie ontpopte de kunstenaar zich als een veelgevraagd portretschilder. Wellicht onder invloed van oriëntalistische doeken van Charles Verlat (1824-1890) ondernam Claus in 1879 een reis naar Spanje, Marokko en Algerije. Aan de Middellandse Zee werd Claus verrast door de heftige koloristische tonaliteiten en de intense lichteffecten op de omgeving. Het tot dan tamelijk sombere, Antwerpse palet verheldert en verlevendigt sterk in de studies en schilderijen uit deze periode. Men mag echter aan deze reis niet te veel belang hechten; artistiek vervolgde Claus bij zijn terugkeer de weg die hij voorheen was ingeslagen. He works as a teacher of screen printing at Ter Kameren (1951 - 1980) and is a member of the Royal Academy (1965).
