Le Dr. Marcel Bertrand, était un médecin parisien figurant parmi les externes reçus au concours de 1896 des Hôpitaux de Paris, ce qui le situe dans la même génération médicale que Van der Elst et dans l'entourage de la Salpêtrière. Notre exemplaire pourrait lui être adressé.Les travaux de recherches de Robert Van der Elst succèdent à une période de débats intenses autour de l'hypnose. A la fin du XIXeme siècle, l'intérêt autour de ce phénomène est relancé par l'opposition de deux conceptions, la vision de Charcot à celle de Bernheim.Pendant longtemps, les notions d'hystérie et d'hypnose ont été intimement associées, et notamment renforcé par les travaux menés par Charcot à la Salpêtrière à la fin du XIXeme siècle. Celui-ci étudie l'hypnose sur des patientes atteintes d'"hystérie" et observe une concordance entre certains phénomènes hypnotiques et les symptômes de cette affection, tel que les paralysies ou contractures. Il en déduit alors que l'hypnose constitue une forme d'hystérie artificielle, et que seul les personnes disposées à l'hystérie sont hypnotisables. Toutefois, cette conception sera vivement contestée par Hyppolite Bernheim, pour qui l'hypnose repose avant tout sur la suggestibilité, et ne constitue pas un état pathologique. Il sera notamment le premier à parler de "psychothérapie" en 1891. C'est en partie à ces conceptions opposées entre l'école de Paris et l'école de Nancy respectivement incarnées par Charcot et Bernheim que s'intéresse les travaux de Van der Elst. Il y retrace l'histoire des deux notions, explore et analyse les mécanismes de la suggestion, de leurs effets thérapeutiques. Sa démonstration s'inscrit dans la continuité de la conception de Charcot, dont témoigne les conclusions de son étude reliant nécessairement l'hypnose à l'hystérie.
