Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the legal principles and practices surrounding enemy property during times of war, particularly in the early 19th century. The author delves into the complex interplay between national interests, international law, and the rights of individuals amidst armed conflict.… One of the key themes examined is the tension between the desire to protect civilian property from seizure and the need to cripple enemy economies to bring about a swift resolution to hostilities. The book draws on extensive research of historical documents and case law to analyze how courts and governments have grappled with these issues throughout history. This timely and thought-provoking work sheds light on the enduring ethical and legal challenges of warfare and its impact on individuals and international relations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Full Leather. Condition: Fair. No Dust Jacket. First Edition, Thus. 592, 570 & errata, appendix, and index. Interesting copy with association to Deane Waldo Malott. Malott was chancellor of the University of Kansas from 1939 to 1951 when he left to become president of Cornell University. The bookplate of Deane Waldo Malott is af…fixed to the front paste downs, and the front free end leaf and fly leaf of Volume I show 38 signatures in the same blue ink. Although there is no presentation noted, there is the date of October 24, 1951 which is the year Malott left KU. A smaller book plate of Paul Cornell dated 1806 is also seen on the front paste downs of both volumes. Full leather covers are scuffed and show scattered wear including spine ends and corners. Leather spine labels are good. Clear tape covers the spine of Volume II. There are a couple of tears on the leaves with the signatures. Scattered foxing and moisture stains, though contents remain clear and intact. Both volumes remain fairly tight.

Contact seller5-star sellerVan Ness' pseudonymous work is a reply to James Cheetham's published attack on Aaron Burr for his activities in state politics and in the presidential election of 1800. Van Ness fires his volleys far and wide, taking aim at political figures of both parties, and on the national and New York state level in order to clear Burr's c…haracter "from the malignant aspersions of his undeserved and wicked enemies." "Burr was so ably defended that newspapers rang with the unknown author's story of confused truth and fiction" - DAB. William Van Ness not only defended Burr in print, but on the dueling ground as well - he served as second to Burr in the duel with Hamilton in 1804, and was indicted as an accessory in Hamilton's murder.
