Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket / Issued Without Jac. 1st Edition. First Edition, 1842. Hardcover quarto (4to, 30cm), original publisher's dark brown cloth. Boards firm and ornately blind-stamped, featuring a distinctive gold-stamped central crinoid/fossil motif on the front cover and gilt spine ornamentation. Yellow clay-coated endpapers. 306 pp. Complete with 80 in-text scientific wood engravings and detailed structural text signatures. [SIGNIFICANT CANADIAN-AMERICAN PROVENANCE] Features a highly notable 19th-century donor bookplate affixed to the front pastedown, reading: "Presented by H. Abbott, Jun. to the Fraser Institute." - The Donor: Harry Abbott (1857-1915) was a prominent Canadian lawyer and the son of Sir John Abbott, the 3rd Prime Minister of Canada. The Abbott family was foundational to the legal and intellectual landscape of late-19th-century Montreal. - The Institution: The Fraser Institute stood as Montreal's very first free public reference library, rendering this a highly desirable association copy linking a major Canadian political family to an iconic early research library. [INTERNAL CONDITION REPORT] Very Good internal state. The Table of Contents and core text pages are tightly bound, clean, and structurally sound. Paper remains remarkably bright and crisp with minimal edge-toning and zero heavy foxing or damp-staining within the main body text signatures. Technical text figures (including woodcuts on pages 216 and 217) are clean and unmarked. Errata sheet present at the rear. [EXTERNAL BINDING & MARKINGS DISCLOSURE] Fair to Good / Ex-Library. External cloth shows typical age-wear, including shelf rubbing to the boards, bumping to corners, and chipping with minor splitting along the cloth hinges at the spine ends. Original gilt leaf/fossil stamping on the front remains legible. Institutional stamps are restricted entirely to the front preliminary bookplate and neat catalog notations, leaving the core scientific text block and illustrations clean and unmarked. A highly authentic copy for history-of-science and Americana collections.

A work of scientific philosophy by a progressive American geologist. Born in Philadelphia, Lardner Vanuxem (17921848) was the son of a French-born shipping merchant. He graduated from the Paris School of Mines in 1819 and went on to become professor of chemistry and mineralogy at South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina). He resigned the position in 1826, going to work as a mining engineer in Mexico, and from 1836 to 1840 worked on the New York Geological Survey. He also took an interest in a variety of civil rights and religious issues, especially new religions such as Mormonism and Millerism, and he was an advocate of women's liberation. Vanuxem is best known for his Geology of New York, Third District (1842), in which he is said to have faintly anticipated Darwin's theory of evolution. As the ANB notes, while Vanuxem's most "lasting impact was strictly in the realm of field geology," he was also "deeply interested in theoretical science," as exemplified in the present work, his Essay on the Ultimate Principles of Chemistry, Natural Philosophy, and Physiology, which outlines his views on science and philosophy, with specific discussions on metallurgy. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 31585. DAB XIX, p.218. ANB 22, p.254. Merrill, THE FIRST HUNDRED YEARS OF AMERICAN GEOLOGY, pp.122-23. Original half red cloth and paper boards, paper label. Spine sunned and slightly chipped at head. Scattered foxing. Overall very good.
