At the behest of the then Guinness chairman, Sir Hugh Beaver, an employee of Guinness, Christopher Chataway (himself a record holder) tasked two of his former university friends, Ross and Norris McWhirter to prepare the first Guinness Book of Records, to be distributed to public houses, as an advertising ploy. It was so successful that it was decided to produce an edition for the general public. The first copy of this edition was produced in August 1955 and was an immediate success.This second edition has the date October 1956 on the 'Introduction' page.
