L'histoire a retenu que l'Internationale ouvrière a largement bénéficié de ces rassemblements et a retenu en particulier le rôle d'Eugène Varlin, ouvrier relieur. Celui-ci présidait l'assemblée générale de la société de Crédit mutuel des ouvriers relieurs tenue le 13 avril 1867. Au cours de cette assemblée générale fut affirmé comme « principe fondamental : l'affranchissement des travailleurs par les travailleurs eux-mêmes. » Tout patronage d'une société d'encouragements était refusé ainsi que l'acceptation de fonds étrangers à la corporation.
