Untorn dust jacket also in attractive shape, with limited gentle wear. -- Yuri Vasnetsov (1900-1973) was a well-known Soviet painter and graphic artist. His work was closely linked with the traditions of Russian folk art, yet he always remained contemporary in his approach. Vasnetsov made his debut in the late 1920s and became one of those artists who initiated the production of Soviet illustrated books for children. During the fifty years of his artistic career he illustrated over one hundred books. Vasnetsov also produced coloured lithographs and worked in easel painting, demonstrating a manner entirely his own. This volume is the most complete book on Vasnetsov ever published. It contains 171 plates, 144 of them in colour. The relationship between traditional and contemporary vision was one of the artist's most important problems both in painting and graphic art. Vasnetsov's fantastic landscapes are profoundly reworked under the influence of Russian scenery; his birds and beasts and fairy-tale personages are very expressive because he invests them with movement and behaviour observed from life. Vasnetsov's creative career, which covered almost half a century, is marked by a rare integrity. It was a path of steady growth, perfection and accumulation of skill. -- Contents [each section opens up with Vasnetsov's quotes]: Introduction; Paintings - Drawings - Watercolours; Book Illustrations - Lithographs - Theatrical Design - Porcelain; Biographical Outline [chronology + b&w photos]; List of plates; List of books illustrated by Vasnetsov.

Add to basketIn the larger and rarer format --- Impressive and scarce edition, of large folio format, of this famous work by the two Russian classics. Viktor Vasnetsov's design for The Song of Wise Oleg "served as an impetus to the revival and further development of national traditions in book art" (Fedorova, our translation): styled as an ancient Russian manuscript, the book unfolds like an accordion, telling the tragic story of prince Oleg. Vasnetsov created decorative initials, head- and endpieces, along with four chromolithographed drawings: 'Meeting with the Wizard', 'Farewell to the Horse', 'He Stepped on the Skull of the Horse', 'Trizna' (a funeral feast). The font, resembling early Cyrillic script, was designed by book artist Viktor Zamirailo. The work was published in quarto format in St Petersburg in 1899 to commemorate Aleksandr Pushkin's centenary. This second edition, issued during World War I, is significantly rarer and in a much larger format, with a redesigned upper wrapper. Provenance: Physical description:Large folio (48 x 34 cm). [6] ll. incl. 4 colour plates tipped-in and wrappers. Accordion-style publisher's printed wrappers. Condition:A bit stained and cockled from waterstaining along edges throughout, occasional light foxing, still a pleasant example in spite of the vulnerability of the production. Bibliography:

An exceptionally fresh example in the original art nouveau binding. In 1884 Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov and a number of other artists were commissioned to paint frescos in St Volodymyr's Cathedral in Kyiv, which had recently been constructed to celebrate a 900 years since Vladimir's Christianisation of Kiev Rus in 897. The somewhat controversial results of this undertaking are documented in this profusely illustrated guide.
