Map frontispiece and 25 photographs on plates. ix + 322 pages. A carefully documented study, by William H Vatcher, who attended the Korean armistice conference as an official participant. It incorporates pertinent portions of the actual conversations between delegates with on-the-spot observations. The material covers the background events leading up to the negotiations, the negotiations themselves, the fight for the agenda, Communist obstacles and delay tactics, the demarcation line and the demilitarized zone, prisoner-of-war issues, and the final agreement, along with an analysis of errors and lessons to be learned. It includes six appendices, which provide valuable information: a statistical summary, day-by-day chronology of the negotiations, and a copy of the final agreements. William Henry Vatcher, Jr. (1920-1965), who earned his Ph.D. in International Relations at Stanford, served in the Navy as Japanese interpreter and interrogator on the staff of Fleet Admiral Nimitz during the Second World War. Later he was transfered to the Army's Psychological Warfare Section. Then, in Korea, during the military armistice negotiations, he acted as psychological warfare adviser to the Senior United Nations Delegate. In this capacity he assisted in the preparation of speeches for the armistice meetings, advised on courses of action, and attended the conferences.
