Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. FIGHTS FOR THE FLAG W. H. Fitchett ("Vedette") Smith, Elder & Co., London. 1898 First Edition 334pp plus 10pp of Publisher's Adverts. This copy is bound in blue linen covered boards with gilt titling and decoration to the spine and the upper board. There is some flaking to the foot of the spine and some bumping to the extremities. Gilt top page edges. Fights for the Flag has been favourably compared to the author's earlier book "Deeds that Won the Empire". To say more than this in praise of the book is un- necessary, for "Deeds that Won the Empire" was one of the best collections of popular battle studies ever published. The author shows in "Fights for the Flag" all the good qualities which he showed in his first volume. There is the same admirable clearness of style, the same comprehensive sympathy, the same power to stir the blood and to paint noble deeds in fitting words. He also makes use of telling quotations. Whenever he can the author gives what the Generals said in their own words. Perhaps the most interesting of the land-fights described in the present volume are the battles of Dettingen and of Minden. In the account of Dettingen Mr. Fitchett makes one realise with great force the terrible position in which George II. and his army found themselves. Ref OO2.

This book takes readers to the Western Front during the First World War, offering a vivid and personal perspective on the experience of a young British soldier. The story unfolds as our protagonist, a newly commissioned Ensign in the Guards, embarks on his first tour of duty. The author, through meticulous detail, paints a picture of life in the British Army during wartime, from the bustling training camps to the quiet reserve, and finally, to the front line trenches themselves. We see the stark contrasts between the camaraderie of the officers' mess and the brutal realities of warfare, where the ever-present threat of shellfire and the looming possibility of death are ever-present. The authorââ â¢s firsthand account of the sights, sounds, and sensations of war offers readers an intimate glimpse into the physical and emotional challenges faced by those who served during this pivotal conflict. Through the Ensign's experiences, the book reveals the human cost of war, the resilience of the British spirit, and the enduring power of brotherhood in the face of adversity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
