Condition: Good. In 8 (cm 16 x 22 circa), pp. (24) + 335 + (1) con errata. La prima carta, con l'occhietto, presenta una variante del titolo:Catalogus virorum illustrium Congregationis Vallisumbrosae. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena. Edizione originale di quest'opera di Venanzio Simi che comprende il catalogo dei prelati dell'ordine vallombrosano, comunita' di monaci benedettini fondata da san Giovanni Gualberto nel 1039, e che prende il nome dalla localita' diVallombrosa. Il testo, in latino, e' preceduto datre sonetti in italiano dedicati al Cardinale Lorenzo Altieri, e all'autore Venanzio Simi, scritti da Girolamo Mazzoleni e da Ermenegildo Paoletti. Compare anche un epigramma in latino dedicato a Lorenzo Altieri indicato con l'anagramma Laurentius De Alteriis. Nell'opera di Simi, studirecenti hanno individuato inesattezze: "Il censimento dei vescovi vallombrosani e' reso difficile sopra tutto dalla rarita' delle fonti che certifichino la condizione precedente all'elezione dei singoli prelati. Nemmeno la storiografia dell'ordine ci soccorre adeguatamente. Infatti molti dei vescovi annoverati nei cataloghi di santi e uomini illustri vallombrosani in realta' non appartenevano alla congregazione. Per esempio, il 'Catalogus sanctorum et plurium virorum illustrium qui veluti mystici flores effloruerunt' in Valle Umbrosa di Venanzio Simi, della fine del XVII secolo, elenca diciassette vescovi vallombrosani nei secoli XII e XIII. Un numero ragionevole, che tuttavia viene drasticamente ridimensionato, se si verifica la documentazione utilizzata dall'erudito vallombrosano" (N. D'Acunto, "I Vallombrosani e l'episcopato nei secoli XII e XIII", Firenze, 2003). Book.

In 4°, piena pergamena coeva con titoletto calligrafico al dorso. Pp. 24 n.n. + 335 + 3 n.n., frontespizio e occhietto (Catalogus virorum illustrium .) in cornice tipografica. Testatine e iniziali xilografici arricchiscono il testo. Nonostante numerosi studi cerchino di togliere autorevolezza all'elencazione presente in quest'opera, particolarmente per quanto riguarda il conteggio degli alti prelati, questo "Catalogo" rimane l'unica storia dell'ordine vallombrosano registrata dal Tiraboschi (Girolamo Tiraboschi, Storia della letteratura italiana di G. T., della Compagnia di Gesù, bibliotecario del serenissimo Duca di Modena, Modena, presso la Società tipografica, 1772-1782, Tomo VIII, parte I, p. 220).
