L'ouvrage n'a rien à voir avec l'Antiquité : ses listes de sénateurs romains commencent en 1220 (un Sénat s'était recréé à Rome entre le VIIe et le VIIIe siècle, avec des attributions administratives municipales ; jouet du baronnat et des familles aristocratiques pendant toute le moyen âge, il visait à concurrencer sur place le pouvoir pontifical).
