In the wake of the dramatic changes taking place in Polish society, in particular as a consequence of EU accession in 2004, especially young people in urban surroundings are rejecting traditional family ties and practicing what was until recently still considered taboo or appeared exotic. Where the traditional order starts to wobble, established gender roles also need to be redefined and restructured: up until now, the Polish man has enjoyed a privileged status, which is now being challenged at all levels. The authors of the twenty essays, interviews and works of fiction are unanimous: the "crisis" (or "change") of a traditional image of masculinity is ubiquitous; career, relationships, family, health - all these and many more issues are causing modern man a headache. It is mostly the tension between traditional role models and the demands of an emancipating social environment that are identified as being the main cause. In contrast, the analyses and suggestions differ; for example regarding how to achieve the new identity that is being sought as a hybrid solution for a new sense of responsibility and partnership. Tomasz Szlendak, Brigitta Helbig-Mischewski, Dariusz Muszer, Adam Leszczynski, Marek Rymsza, Andrzej Stasiuk, Janusz Glowacki, Mariusz Sieniewicz, Szczepan Twardoch, Hanna Samson and Milka Malzahn are amongst the authors.
