Fille de Louis-Charles d'Albert, duc de Luynes, et de sa seconde épouse, Anne de Rohan-Montbazon, Jeanne-Baptiste d'Albert de Luynes (1670-1736) épousa en 1683 un aristocrate piémontais, Joseph Scaglia, comte de Verruë (1661-1704). Le couple s'installa à Turin, où la comtesse de Verruë fut, pendant quinze ans, la favorite de Victor-Amédée II, duc de Savoie et roi de Sardaigne (1666-1732). En octobre 1700, elle retourna secrètement en France et s'établit à Paris. Dans son hôtel particulier de la rue du Cherche-Midi, elle reçut un cercle restreint d'écrivains et de philosophes. Riche, intelligente et cultivée, elle constitua une collection de peintures, de dessins, d'estampes, de porcelaines et de sculptures. Elle est considérée comme l'une des premières femmes bibliophiles et possédait une bibliothèque d'environ 18 000 volumes, répartis entre ses deux résidences à Paris et à Meudon. Fait intéressant, les quelques ouvrages médicaux figurant dans son catalogue de vente de 1737 étaient tous des ouvrages de médecine pratique. Première édition de cette nouvelle traduction française par le médecin et traducteur médical parisien Jean-Baptiste Lebrethon. Cet ouvrage important de Sanctorius fut publié pour la première fois en latin en 1614 sous le titre De Statica medicina, puis en français en 1695. Il s'agit de la première étude systématique du métabolisme basal. « Sanctorius fut le fondateur de la physiologie du métabolisme.
