Die Holzschnittabbildungen, in früherer Zeit Tizian zugeschrieben, stammen überwiegend von von Calcar: "Das Hauptwerk des Jan Stephan sind (.) die Illustrationen zur Anatomie des Vesalius, die vielleicht nicht ohne Einfluß auf Rembrandt geblieben sind," (Th./B. 5, 376). Sie wurden von den Originalstöcken abgezogen, die erst 1943 kriegsbedingt in München verbrannten; bemerkenswert ist, dass schon seit dem 16. Jhdt Kopien (auch in Kupfer), Plagiate und verderbte Augaben des Vesal erschienen (vgl. dazu ausführlich Gillespie 14, 11f). Vorliegendes Werk erschien von 1781 bis 1783 in Lieferungen, was das Fehlen der beiden Tafeln (Adam und Eva) erklären mag, die hier nie eingebunden waren. Die Liste der Subskribenten verzeichnet 294 Namen und kann vielleicht als Hinweis auf die Auflagenhöhe dienen. Ecken und Kanten teils stärker bestoßen und mit Bezugspapierverlust; etwas berieben; vorderer fliegenden Vorsatz knitterfaltig; Holzschnitt-Titel angeschmutzt; innen sauber und gut, die Abbildungen meist sauber und kräftig. Ein Faksimile-Druck (Lindau, 1982; nahezu neuwerig), um ca. 20% verkleinert, liegt bei. Provenienz: Wappen-Sammlungsstempel auf Vorderspiegel: "Grassegger'sche Sammlung. Historischer Verein Neuburg a/D". DE.

Vesal, Vesalius Andreas (1515 Brüssel - 1564 verstorben auf einer Reise nach Jerusalem; Arzt und Anatom. Begründer einer wissenschaftlichen Anatomie. Vesal war zunächst Professor der Chirurgie in Padua, später Leibarzt Karls V. und Philipps II. von Spanien. Er forderte die Durchforschung der menschlichen Leiche als allein zuverlässigen Weg zur Erkenntnis des Körperbaus und begründete damit die neuzeitliche Anatomie und das morphologische Denken in der Medizin. 1543 erschien sein epochemachendes Werk "De humani corporis fabrica").
