Johannes Veslingâs Syntagma Anatomicum is one of the most influential anatomical treatises of the seventeenth century and a cornerstone in the advancement of modern anatomical science. Vesling, Professor of Anatomy at the University of Paduaâ"Europeâs foremost anatomical centerâ"presents a systematic and detailed study of the human body based on direct dissection and observation. The work reflects the scientific revolution in anatomy following Vesalius, presenting accurate descriptions of muscles, organs, vascular structures, and skeletal anatomy. Veslingâs text helped establish Padua as a leading center for anatomical teaching and influenced generations of physicians and surgeons throughout Europe. This edition is richly illustrated with finely engraved anatomical plates depicting full human figures, dissected musculature, internal organs, skeletal elements, and neurological structures. The engraved architectural title page, showing an anatomical theater scene, is especially striking and emblematic of early modern medical education. The illustrations combine scientific precision with artistic craftsmanship and were essential tools for teaching anatomy in the seventeenth century. The text is printed in Latin and represents one of the earliest comprehensive illustrated anatomical manuals used in medical education. Condition & Binding:ÂEarly full calf binding, likely contemporary or near-contemporary with publication, with raised bands and remnants of gilt tooling to spine. Binding shows expected age-related wear, including rubbing, scuffing, and cracking to leather surfaces, particularly along joints and spine. Spine worn with some loss to leather and surface abrasions; joints holding but fragile. Boards secure. Text block complete with engraved title page and multiple anatomical plates present. Pages show moderate age toning, scattered foxing, and occasional staining consistent with seventeenth-century medical texts. Overall- good.

He was also director of the botanical gardens there. The present work is his most important contribution and was popular as a textbook for a number of years. VESLING aimed to explain the parts of the body as they were encountered during dissection and to avoid discussion of theoretical matters in order not to create confusion. However, he departed from his stated purpose to give a clear picture of the circulation of the blood and action of the heart based on Harvey's research. His descriptions of the lymphatics and asertion that four pulmonary veins normally empty into the heart's left auricle are of particular scientific significance".
