Twelve years earlier he had arrived in Batavia as an eighteen year old man. He became the author of the most disillusioning book ever written about the Indies. It was a big tirade against the colony and its inhabitants. 'A contemporary accused him of having 'dipped his pen in vitriolic acid'. Indeed, no book on the Indies so unreasonable and so rancorous as this has ever appeared before or since' (Nieuwenhuys, Mirror of the Indies, p. 134). Cat. KITLV p.259 (second edition); Buur, Persoonlijke documenten, 554 (second edition).
