Hardcover. ix, 281 p.; 22 cm. `According to Saint Thomas Aquinas there are two distinct "sciences" to which the name "Theology" may be given. On the one hand there is a body of propositions resulting from philosophical reflection on the `cognitions of God' available to man on the basis of the natural powers of reason alone. Those propositions express a dispositional state of the intellect to which Aquinas gives the name of scientia divina or "Divine Knowledge." .In addition to scientia divina there is a dispositional state of the intellect called "faith"; to the "science" produced by faith, Aquinas gives the name of scientia dei or "Knowledge of God." The propositions which express that "science" result from a theological reflection on the `cognitions of God' available to man on the basis of revelation (sacra scriptura). The titles by which Aquinas refers to the two theological sciences are most significant. Natural or philosophical theology yields a form of knowledge which may be termed "divine"--i.e., related to divine matters--but which is not termed "knowledge of God." The term "knowledge of God" is restricted by Aquinas to that science which results from revelation, even though,as he claims, faith does not terminate here and now in knowledge or science. The distinction between scientia divina and scientia dei, and the way in which each is `about God' forms the essential subject of this study.' (3) -- `That Aquinas failed to make some of the mistakes attributed to him by friend and foe alike is one of the theses of this book--it is in no way implied, however, that Aquinas failed to make mistakes.' (vii) Good ex-lib. lt. spotted orig. tan cloth.

The problem inherent in religious language is presented in terms of the referential status of the word "God." The author goes on to argue that the significance of any referential term is dependent upon the ability of that term to play a significant role within a unified conceptual system. 281 pages including index. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In this book, Victor Preller examines the logical status of religious language in the light of recent developments in American analytic philosophy. The problem inherent in religious language is presented in terms of the referential status of the word God. The author argues that the significance of any referential term is dependent upon the ability of that term to play a significant role 'within' a unified conceptual system. The problem is shown to transcend the epistemological dogmas of Positivism and Conceptual Empiricism and to be inherent in any intelligible epistemology, including that of Thomas Aquinas, whose theological treatises serve as a model of religious language for the thesis of this book. According to Professor Preller, Divine Science (Aquinas' term for what we now call Natural Theology) results from a reflection upon the limitations encountered by the intellect in its attempt to render intelligible the objects of human experience. In the Science of God (Aquinas' term for that mode of knowing engendered by faith), the unknown meta-empirical referent of Divine Science becomes the object of the human intellect. While this study develops out of the discussions inaugurated by Flew and McIntyre in 'New Essays in Philosophical Theology', it rejects the excessively empirical approach of most other studies in that tradition. It applies post-positivistic analysis to specifically Catholic theological language, but it obviously applies to the theological language involved in any form of theism.
