First Edition. 5 volumes complete in full leather. 5 raised bands to each spine with gilt decorations between each, with 2 burgundy/gilt titled, decorated Title labels and the remains of a paper (shelving number ? ) to the foot of each volume. All extremities rubbed, scraped, chipped, worn and torn, with some loss here and there. All Hinges tight and secure however, and overall the set looks quite 'shabbily attractive' on the shelf with all the labels intact and most of the decorated compartments still relatively bright. All edges speckled red. Marbled Endpapers to each volume. 4 of the volumes have an integral blue ribbon bookmark intact but no sign of one in the 5th volume. Each Title page has had the bottom half inch of the page cut off. The publishers/date details are all intact and I think it was just a blank section that has been cut off probably with a former owner's name on, but not having seen it before I can't be sure! Some charming b/w copper engraved Head and Tail pieces in Each book. Some creased corners in each volume. Volume 1 = Portrait frontispiece -portrait gravé dans le premier volume - 'Françoys de Scepeaulx Sire de Vieilleville Mareschal de France'. (xxxii) + 446 pp. In this volume the front free endpaper has some loss and the endpapers, frontispiece and first few pages are VERY damp stained, this staining continues through three quarters of the book on the blank front edges of the pages up to page 138. There is also a little very light staining affecting a few pages near the end of this volume o/w the text is overall very clean. Volume 2 - A former owner's name in ink on the top corner of the half title. A little very light damp staining to the blank front corners of many of the pages not affecting any text which is very clean and bright. (viii) + 461 pp. Volume 3. A former owner's name in ink on the top corner of the half title. A little very light damp staining to the blank front corners of the pages near the end not affecting any text which is very clean and bright. (viii) + 440 pp. Volume 4. A former owner's name in ink on the top corner of the half title. The text is very clean and bright. (viii) + 411 pp. Volume 5. A former owner's name in ink on the top corner of the half title. A little very light damp staining to the rear endpaper corner not affecting any text which is very clean and bright. (viii) + 468 pp. A complete set which is not without its faults, but Overall a Tight and pretty bright set of quite an early Memoir. The Staining could be cleaned.
