Oberschlesien, als eigenständige Geschichtslandschaft innerhalb des alten Herzogtums Schlesien, wurde erst spät von Historikern wahrgenommen, insbesondere im Kontext der Industriellen Revolution und der deutsch-polnischen Nationalitätenkonflikte des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Die kritische Geschichtsschreibung wandte sich erst später dem durch den Versailler Frieden geteilten Grenzland zu, das reich an Erz- und Kohlevorkommen war. Viktor Loewe, ein preußischer Archivbeamter aus Oberschlesien, der 17 Jahre am Staatsarchiv Breslau tätig war und Mitbegründer der Historischen Kommission für Schlesien war, verfasste eine bedeutende, wenn auch unvollständige, Darstellung der oberschlesischen Entwicklung während der preußischen Zeit seit 1740. Seine Monographie berücksichtigt alle wichtigen historischen Aspekte und ist quellenfundiert, was sie auch heute noch lesenswert macht. Loewe, dessen Verdienste um die schlesische und preußische Geschichte im Schatten der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft und seinem unerwarteten Tod 1933 nicht ausreichend gewürdigt wurden, verdient es, dem interessierten Leser wieder zugänglich gemacht zu werden.
