Colon ayant passé près de vingt ans en Algérie, Alexandre Villacrose rédigea ces mémoires pour servir aux futurs colons souhaitant se lancer notamment dans l agriculture. Il s agissait de faciliter la tâche de ces derniers en leur évitant de tomber dans mille tracas propre à décourager leur installation. Après son service militaire, Villacrose était devenu employé des postes à Alger. Sa vie de colon ne commença véritablement qu au moment de son installation à Dellys, dans le Contantinois. Il est alors victime de vols et raconte des déboires et ses difficultés, tous les menus problèmes du quotidien qui érodèrent son moral. Bien que sa propriété ait fini par prendre de la valeur, Villacrose considéra son expérience comme un échec. Nous sommes donc loin du récit officiel qui présentait alors la colonisation comme une entreprise glorieuse couronnée de succès. Le point de vu singulier de Villacrose fait de son ouvrage un document riche et passionnant sur la psychologie et les états d âme du colonisateur.
